Home Visits
Criteria for a Home Visit
A GP/Advanced Nurse Practitioner/Practice Paramedic may agree to a home visit if the patient:
- Is terminally ill – End-of-life care patients may receive home visits.
- Is truly housebound – The patient is physically unable to leave their home due to a severe illness or disability.
- Has a severe medical condition – Conditions that would worsen if the patient were transported to the GP surgery.
- Has mobility issues – Conditions such as paralysis, severe arthritis, or significant frailty may justify a visit.
Situations Where a Home Visit is Usually Not Approved
- Lack of transport – GPs do not offer home visits because a patient has no car or difficulty arranging transport.
- Minor illnesses – Colds, mild infections, or minor injuries do not usually qualify.
- Convenience requests – If the patient is able to attend the surgery but prefers a home visit, it is likely to be declined.
A patient requesting a home visit should call 01787 370011 and ask for the Medical Secretaries to give the reason for the visit request. Please be aware that a clinician may call before a visit is agreed.
If you need a visit please telephone before 10.30am.
